Mauritius: Woman, 41, elected Mayor of Port Louis

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - For the first time since the Mauritian independence in 1968, a woman has been elected the Mayor of Port Louis, the nation's capital, PANA reported Friday.

Mrs. Dorine Chukowry, 41, who was Deputy Mayor, replaces Aslam Hossenally as Mayor of the town of 150,000 inhabitants for the next two years.

She was sworn into office Thursday.

''I have never thought that I would be the first woman Lord Mayor,'' said Mrs Chukowry, adding that her priority would be the rehabilitation of Port-Louis theatre, which had been closed since 2008.

She also said she will work to solve the problem of street hawkers in the capital city.
