Mauritius: Mauritius to introduce bill geared at fostering gender equality

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - Mauritian Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare Minister Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo on Tuesday said a Gender Equality Bill will soon be introduced in Parliament aimed at promoting gender equality, help women realise their full potential and ensure their rightful place in society.

She said the new legislation on gender parity will follow the enactment of the Children’s Bill which is under review at the level of the Ministry.

"Though women are gaining grounds in several spheres such as in the transport and building sectors, discrimination still exists as women are often denied opportunities at top management level," the Minister said.

Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo stressed the need for children to be educated in gender equality while highlighting the importance of inculcating in them, at a young age, appropriate values and attitudes, namely the habit of sharing everyday tasks and other responsibilities that can contribute to achieve gender equality.
