Mauritian senior citizens get anti-flu vaccination

Port Louis- Mauritius (PANA) -- Mauritian Social Security and National Solidarity Minister Sam Lauthan Wednesday launched an anti-influenza vaccination campaign for the elderly.
Some 108,000 senior citizens are to be vaccinated under the programme, unveiled at the NPF building in Rose-Hill, 10-km south of Port Louis.
Officials at the Ministry said the crusade was part of a national policy for the welfare of elderly, organised in collaboration with the Health Ministry, Biocom Ltd and French laboratory Aventis Pasteur.
Aventis Pasteur donated 50,000 doses of vaccines for the programme.
Lauthan said the government policy seeks to bring more comfort to senior citizens.
"This campaign is like a tribute to our parents and grand-parents, who have contributed in building the present society," he said.
Lauthan said the campaign could become an annual event, given that thousands of people die of influenza each year around the world.
