Mauritian President Gurib-Fakim resigns

Port Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim intends to step down on 23 March 2018 following misunderstanding between her and Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth,   her lawyer told journalists here on Saturday.

Mr. Yousouf Mohamed, describing the issue as an "open war" between the two leaders, said it came out of revelations on 23 February by the daily L'express, that the head of the Mauritian state used a credit card to the tune of US $27,000 from Planet Earth Institute (PEI), an a non-governmental organisation set up by Angolan billionaire Alvaro Sobrinho.

"The President's letter of resignation is ready to be sent to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms. Maya Hanoomanjee," said the lawyer. "The President needs a week to pick up her personal belongings."
