Mauritanian party seeks law against racism

Nouakchott- Mauritania (PANA) -- A Mauritanian opposition party, the national u nion for reformation and development (RNRD), has called for the promulgation of a law that will make racism a criminal offence in the countr y, the party said in a statement here.
RNRD, with five MPs in the nation's parliament, also suggested the establishme nt of an institute "for the preservation and strengthening of national unity".
The suggestions came amid a nation-wide effort to repatriate thousands of Maur itanian citizens, who fled to Senegal and Mali following ethnic tensions in the country in 1989.
Most of those who fled belong to the country's black community.
