Mandela's condition 'critical' - Zuma

Johannesburg, South Africa (PANA) - Former South African President and global icon Nelson Mandela, who has been receiving treatment for a lung infection at a Pretoria hospital, is now in critical condition, the country's presidency announced on Sunday.

The local media quoted presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj as making the announcement.

President Jacob Zuma has issued a statement saying Mr Mandela's doctors were "doing everything possible to get his condition to improve", local media reported. He and the family have asked for prayers for the 94 year-old icon.

President Zuma, who is reported to have visited Mr Mandela on Sunday, said he was in "good hands".

Mr Mandela's condition apparently deteriorated in the past 24 hours.

His family has asked the country to "keep the father of the nation in your prayers".

Mr Mandela served 27 years in prison for his role in the fight against apartheid.
