Mandela's charitable organisations mourn his passing

Pretoria, South Africa (PANA) - The Nelson Mandela Foundation, Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Mandela Rhodes Foundation have expressed their profound sadness at the passing of their founder, former South African President Nelson Mandela, at the age of 95 Thursday.

''It is with the deepest regret that we have learned of the passing of our founder, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela – Madiba,'' the three charitable organisations created by Mandela said in a joint statement, which was obtained by PANA here.

''We want to express our sadness at this time. No words can adequately describe this enormous loss to our nation and to the world. We give thanks for his life, his leadership, his devotion to humanity and humanitarian causes. We salute our friend, colleague and comrade and thank him for his sacrifices for our freedom,'' they said.

The South African Presidency announced Mandela's death, which occurred 20h50 at his Johannesburg home Thursday, saying he died peacefully in the company of his family.

Mandela died about three months after he was discharged from hospital, where he had been admitted for a recurring lung infection.
