Mandela remains in 'critical but stable' condition

Johannesburg, South Africa (PANA) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela remains in 'critical but stable' condition at the Pretoria hospital where he was admitted on 8 June for a recurring lung infection, the country's presidency said in its latest update.

“We remind all South Africans to begin planning for Madiba’s birthday on the 18th of July. We must all be able to do something good for humanity on this day, in tribute to our former President,’’ President Jacob Zuma was quoted to have said in the update, in perhaps an indication that the global icon's health prognosis is no longer as dire as previously feared.

President Zuma thanked all South Africans for keeping the former President and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

South Africans have continued to flock to the hospital to pray for Mandela, who will be 95 on 18 July.
