Mandela laid to rest

Qunu, South Africa (PANA) - The body of former South African President Nelson Mandela was laid to rest on Sunday in his ancestral home in Qunu, Eastern Cape.

Earlier, an estimated 5,000 mourners attended a funeral service in a giant marquee in the foothills of the Eastern Cape, where South Africa’s first democratically-elected leader, Africa’s greatest son and the world’s moral beacon was raised shortly after the First World War.

Mandela's widow Graca Machel and ex-wife Winnie-Madikizela Mandela were among the dignitaries who included heads of state and talk show host Oprah Winfrey, US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Tutu had earlier said he would not attend the funeral because he had not been invited, but government pointed out that nobody was invited and the clergyman had been accredited.

After a long battle with a recurring lung infection, Mandela died 5 Dec. in Johannesburg at the age of 95.
