Mandela discharged from hospital

Johannesburg, South Africa (PANA) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from the hospital, nine days after he was admitted, the South African presidency said on Saturday.

Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in statement that the discharge of the 94-year-old global icon Nelson Mandela followed a ''sustained and gradual improvement in his general condition".

The statement said Mandela would now receive ''home-based high care''.

Since his admission to the hospital 27 March for recurring lung infection and pneumonia, the health of the former President has attracted global interest.

He was also hospitalised last December for the same illness.
