Mali marks international press freedom day

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - Mali on Thursday marked international press freedom day on the theme:  ‘Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law."

The international press freedom day is to highlight the basics of press freedom, evaluate press freedom throughout the world, defend the independence of media and pay tribute to journalists who died in the course of their duty.

In Mali, the event was marked by debates and exhibition at the Press Centre in Bamako that was attended several personalities including the minister of Digital Economy and Communication, Arouna Modibo Touré, the president of Malian journalists association, Dramane Alou Koné, members of the High Authority of Communication and journalists.

The international press freedom day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on 3 May 1993, following the recommendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO general conference in 1991.
