Mali: Mali trains traditional healers on Ebola

Bamako, Mali (PANA) – A training session for local traditional healers on the risks of the spread of the Ebola virus disease opened on Friday in Bamako, capital of Mali.

Jointly organized by Save the Children and the Malian umbrella associations of traditional healers and herbalists (FEMATH), the session is the start of an extensive programme aimed at sensitizing traditional healers and herbalists on the Ebola virus disease across the country.

The session is also to get them to mobilize in the fight against Ebola and extend efforts to the other layers of the community to scale up advocacy with Malian authorities to lead them to get further involved in the fight against this disease.

At the opening of the session, the President of the FEMATH, Mohamed Fall, explained that the training would help better guide traditional healers in the fight against the epidemic.

The head of the National Public Health Research Institute (INRSP), Dr Mamadou Traore Sounkalo, said traditional and conventional medicine should harmonize their efforts in the fight against this disease.

"As health workers, traditional healers also remain exposed to the disease because patients in African countries first consult traditional healers," he stressed.

The country director of "Save the Children" for Mali and Guinea, Raphael Syndaye, said that in the fight against Ebola, the traditional healers and herbalists should work closely with practitioners of modern medicine.

"They have to tell the truth in time to inform the competent authorities if a doubt arises about a patient," he said.

He added that traditional healers and herbalists were in constant contact with patients and could in turn, if they were not well informed, be victims or people through whom the virus can spread.

Therefore, "Save the Children" has mobilized to train and educate traditional healers to enable them to better combat the disease.

He urged them to act as ambassadors at the level of their communities by conveying the right messages that would help people, both individually and collectively, to combat Ebola.

The session was on the theme: "Knowledge level of traditional healers, role and behavior of traditional healers in dealing with Ebola."
