Mali: '9 soldiers killed in clashes with Tuareg rebels'

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Malian Ministry of Defence has announced the death of nine Malian soldiers in an attack perpetrated by the Tuareg rebels near the country's border with Mauritania, a big blow to the peace deal under the aegis of the UN.

The attack was carried out on Wednesday evening in Léré, South-west of Timbuktu, and is the latest in the incessant clashes between the Tuareg rebels and the Malian army/pro-government militias.

The ministry said in a statement Thursday evening that six soldiers were injured and six others taken hostage by the rebels.

Ten rebels were killed and 16 others injured in the clashes.

The UN has warned that the clashes are threatening the Malian peace deal, which is expected to be signed on 15 May in Bamako.
