Malawi: FIFA to cover Malawi's financial expenses in CHAN, AFCON matches

Blantyre, Malawi (PANA) - FIFA will financially support Malawi in its participation in the Championship for African Nations (CHAN) and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to the President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Walter Nyamilandu, the deal came through after Malawi successfully negotiated for financial aid from FIFA in both competitions.

He said the Malawi national team, the Flames, will get FIFA funding on travel and accommodation expenses. He was speaking on Saturday in Blantyre during the unveiling of the new Malawi national football team coach, Ronny Geneugden of Belgium.

He said the deal boosted the morale of the association on its drive to recruit an expatriate coach in the face of financial problems.

"Under the deal, FIFA will meet 60% to 70% of the expenses for the trip to Madagascar,” Nyamilandu said.

“It is for this reason that we were able to go ahead with the plans of hiring an expatriate coach because we knew that government would be relieved as they will not spend much on the trip to Madagascar.

FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda clarified that the association would utilise the FIFA Forward Fund for the Flames away expenses.

”We are entitled to US$ 175,000 per year from the FIFA Forward project under Gianni Infantino's leadership at FIFA to assist financially the struggling association,” Gunda said.

Malawi plays away to Madagascar on 22 April in CHAN with the return leg set for a week later at Bingu Stadium.

In AFCON, Malawi is in the same group with Africa Champions Cameroon, Morocco and Comoros.
