Lightning kills 9 people since July in Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Lightning has claimed at least 9 lives since July this year, a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs in Kigali has said.

This year, 16 persons have been killed since January with most deaths taking place in paddy fields and open areas in southern and western Rwanda, it said.

Most of the victims were struck while working on crop fields, according to official reports obtained by PANA in Kigali. Most lightning deaths occur in the raining period from July to September and February to May.

Lightning strikes are frequent across Rwanda, which has many hills and mountains, and the country’s police record a number of human and livestock deaths each year.
