Libyan Prime Minister, activists discuss the role of civil society in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libyan Prime Minister, Abdelhamid al-Dbaiba, on Saturday evening held a meeting with representatives of civil society organisations (CSOs) from all Libyan cities on the importance of their roles for the country.

During the meeting, which was also attended by the ministers of Social Affairs, Youth, Culture and Knowledge Development, State for Women's Affairs, the government spokesperson and the director of the Foreign Affairs Department, al-Dbaiba addressed the important role of civil society organisations as a link between the citizen and the various state institutions.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Press Office on Saturday evening said the CSOs' complementary roles in providing services to the people were also discussed.

These roles, especially during the elections scheduled in December, is to encourage citizens to register and participate, and raise awareness about the polls.

Participants' views were heard on the challenges and problems facing the work of their organisations, and the need to organise the sector to ensure its effectiveness and independence.

The participants stressed the need to unify the Office of the Civil Society Commissioner, a public body, and took into consideration their remarks on the draft regulation for the work of civil society organisations, in order to amend and adopt it as soon as possible.
