Libyan Presidential Council Chairman attends AU Chairperson's Bureau meeting

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Manfi, took part Monday in the meeting of the Bureau of the African Union (AU) presidency held via videoconferencing.

Also participating are the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, current chairman of the AU, Felix Tshisekedi, and the heads of state of South Africa, Senegal and the Comoros Islands..

The meeting was also attended by the chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Egyptian prime minister, the foreign ministers of Congo and Ghana, and the chairpersons of the regional economic communities.

A statement from the press office of the President of the Libyan Presidential Council said the meeting discussed the venue and format of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Union's Executive Council (African Ministers of Foreign Affairs) to be held on 14 and 15 October, and the third biannual coordination summit to be held on 16 October.

Additionally, the meeting will discuss the holding of the second African Union-European Union ministerial meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, scheduled for 25-26 October.

The participants again reviewed the outcome of the meeting of the African Heads of State and Government Committee on Climate Change held last June, and discussed the holding of the Afro-Turkish Summit slated for next December.

In his address, Mr. Al-Manfi stressed the importance of continuing to work with the same momentum and coordination in the service of the continent's problems, through continuous meetings.

These, he stated, were an essential pillar to support continental integration, and the follow-up of the implementation of what had been agreed.

He expressed "his hope that all strategic partnerships will follow a clear pattern that reflects the interests and priorities of the countries of the continent, not only through the volume of investments, but also with the continent's awareness and capacity of the changes taking place in the world, enabling the continent to express its positions and participate in continental development".

Assuming the current presidency of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) grouping Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia, Al-Manfi suggested that the 39th session of the Executive Council and the third biannual meeting between the African Union and the regional economic communities should be held in such a way as to ensure that all measures are taken to lead to the success of their work and the attainment of advanced results.

He proposed that "50% participation in face-to-face meetings versus 50% via video technology as an option for this meeting".

The Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council congratulated Rwanda for hosting the next ministerial meeting of the African Union Council scheduled for later this month.
