Libya to hold AIDS awareness day

Tripoli- Libya (PANA) -- Libya will on Monday hold an HIV/AIDS awareness day in t he capital, Tripoli, that will focus on the partnership programmes with internat i onal organizations and institutions in the fight against the pandemic and Sexual l y Transmitted Diseases (STDs).
The event will be co-organized by the Libyan National Centre for the fight again st STDs, National Council on Endemic Diseases (NCDC) and the United Nations Offi c e on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), according to official Libyan sources.
The day is aimed at promoting partnership between the European Union Commission, the UNODC and the NCDC in the fight against AIDS.
During the day, a national campaign to prevent misuse and habits on drug consump tion and HIV/AIDS among consumers through injections will be launched.
As part of the day's agenda, there will be the presentation of a project aimed a t developing and executing the national anti-AIDS strategy for 2010-2013 as well as partnerships programmes between the EU Commission and the United Nations Deve l opment Programme (UNDP).
Libyan anti-drug statistics published recently reveal that between 2000 and 2009 , 320 kg of heroin, 101,564 tonnes of hashish, 41 kg of cocaine and 5,621,493 ta b lets and psychotropic drugs were seized.
Taking drugs by injection remains the main source of contracting HIV/AIDS in Lib ya, and represents a between 50 and 80 per cent of new AIDS cases.
According to statistics published this year, Libya has about 11,152 people infec ted with HIV, or a prevalence rate of 0.
13 per cent.
