Libya 'determined' to host an extraordinary CEN-SAD Summit this month

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya is determined to host an extraordinary summit of the heads of state and government of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) this month.

This position was stated by the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity (GNU), during a meeting with the ambassadors of the countries of the organisation.

The meeting was held on Thursday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Tripoli and chaired by the director of the African Affairs Department, a statement said.

The meeting was devoted to discussing the logistical and executive modalities of holding the extraordinary summit of CEN-SAD convened by Libya during the ordinary session of the Executive Council in Rabat on 29 and 30 March 2022 for the return of the Executive Secretariat to its permanent headquarters in Tripoli.

The Director of the African Affairs Department reaffirmed that Libya is "determined" to host the summit in Tripoli this month, noting the importance of CEN-SAD politically and economically to serve the interests of member states and meet the aspirations of their peoples.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the heads of diplomatic missions present affirmed, for their part, the importance of this meeting.

The meeting was attended by the ambassadors of Ghana, Tunisia, Niger and Central African Republic, as well as the chargés d'affaires of the embassies of Burkina Faso, Sudan, Guinea, Eritrea, Somalia, Mali, Comoros, and the honorary consul of Benin, according to the Libyan Foreign Ministry.

In 2019, CEN-SAD's headquarters in Tripoli was moved to N'Djamena, Chad, due to the insecurity that had prevailed in Libya since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi regime in the wake of the 17 February 2011 revolution.

CEN-SAD was established on 4 February 1998 in Tripoli with the main objective of political, economic and cultural integration among its members.
