Libya High National Elections Commission ready for forthcoming elections

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The head of Libya's High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Imad Al-Sayeh, has reaffirmed the readiness of the commission to hold the elections on time, through the geographical constituencies.

Participating in a Libyan salon, a discussion group that holds regular debates, on Monday in Tripoli, Al-Sayeh praised the voter registration update, which commenced at the end of last year, saying they could overcome the political division in the north African country.

At the debate, under the sponsorship of the National Libyan Channel, Al-Sayeh disclosed that two of four conditions are available for conducting the electoral process - the political consensus, which was reached in the Paris Meeting, and the presidential decision to finance the HNEC budget to the tune of 66,120,000 Libyan dinars,

He said the third condition for conducting the electoral process is law and legislation, while the fourth condition is securing the electoral process.

Al-Sayeh said that the commission is waiting for the House of Representatives to pass a law guiding the electoral process and a referendum.

He also stressed that the commission successfully conducted elections in 2012 and 2014, through an action plan developed by experts, hailing the role of the civil society organizations in monitoring the process.

Al-Sayeh revealed that there are 1,912 electoral centres with 7,000 polling stations, requiring highly-professional personals to make the electoral process a success in any future electoral polls.

PANA reports that there has been a widespread controversy in the country over whether to hold a parliamentary and presidential elections before the end of this year or to postpone them until a referendum on the constitution is held so the elections held will be guided by the constitution.

Last week, the House of Representatives failed to pass the referendum law on the constitution, after a dispute erupted between its members over certain provisions of the law.
