Libya: Libyan army kills 20 in surprise attack on Sudanese rebels

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – A Libyan army unit based in the southern region of Koufra early Thursday killed about 20 rebels and captured six others in a surprise attack around a security checkpoint in Bouzrik, 200 km from the city of Koufra, said Abdelrahman Hachem, chief of the Libyan army unit.

According to the military official, the checkpoint was under control of Sudanese rebel groups --  Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Movement for Liberation of Sudan (MLS).

"We carried out a surprise attack against the groups, killing several of them and causing them a huge material damage. Five vehicles belonging to the MLS have been destroyed," Hachem said, explaining that five soldiers sustained minor injuries during the clash.

"The armed groups who took up position at the Bouzrik checkpoint often block the road to kill and rob civilians travelling from and to Koufra as well as other cities in the North," he said, adding that his troops are now positioned in the Bouzrik zone waiting for reinforcement from Koufra.
