Libya: EU to mediate between al-Sarraj, Haftar

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its willingness to mediate between the chairman of the Libyan presidential council of the coalition government of national accord, Fayez al-Sarraj, and the commander of the Libyan national army, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who controls portions of Libya.

The EU's senior representative for security and foreign affairs, Federica Mogherini, made the commitment at a news conference on Monday evening at the end of a meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers in Brussels.

She insisted on the continuation of European support to the coalition government and to Mr al-Sarraj.

According to Mrs Mogherini, the EU did not see any problem in Russia's intervention in the Libyan crisis, and described Russia's efforts to promote stability in the Mediterranean as "positive".

She added that the EU would open talks with Moscow in a bid to find agreement for cooperation in the Mediterranean.

Mrs Mogherini also said she had held talks on telephone with the Russian minister of foreign affairs, Serguei Lavrov, during which they discussed the situations in Syria, Libya and Ukraine.
