Libya: Benghazi residents voluntarily surrender weapons to preserve security

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Determined to preserve security in their area, residents of Libya's second largest city, Benghazi, which is about 1,050 kilometres east of the capital, Tripoli, have started to surrender the weapons in their possession, according the local newspaper, Qurayna.

The paper reported that the development followed an appeal from the Special Forces of the "Essaigha" barracks on 14 July.

Citing insecurity in the area, the Special Forces appealed to young people and families in possession of weapons to hand them over to the Libyan National Army who in return will compensate them.

The proliferation of weapons of all types had caused some anxiety among Libyans, prompting residents of several cities and regions across the country to ask their people to turn in the weapons.
