Libya: Arab league reaffirms support to UN efforts in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – The representative of the Secretary General of the Arab League, Nasser al-Koudwa, has reaffirmed his organization's support to efforts by the UN in Libya, particularly moves by Bernardo Leon, the special envoy of the UN Secretary General, to avoid the escalation of violence in the north African country.

In a communiqué issued Friday and quoted by the Libyan local media on Saturday, the Arab League said that al-Koudwa held talks on the phone with Mr Leon on the latest development in Libya and the measures which the UN envoy will take in the domain of the Libyan national talks.

He made his comments just as the inter-Libyan talks are about to resume in Geneva, Switzerland, next week.

Libya is the theatre of a wave of violence which escalated over the past few days with the fresh outbreak of armed clashes between Islamist militias and the Libyan army in the east of the country where there are many oil terminals.

Clashes have also been reported in the west of the country, around the air base of al-Outhia, Benghazi and Derna.
