Liberia election: Opposition leader Boakai set to win run-off poll

Monrovia, Liberia (PANA) - Liberia's main opposition leader and former vice president Joseph Boakai is set to win the 14 November presidential run-off vote with nearly all the votes declared.

The Liberia National Election Commission said with 99.58% of the votes declared on Friday, Mr. Boakai, 78, of the Unity Party (UP) has 50.89% (814,212 votes) while President George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has 49.11% (785,778 votes).

The Electoral Commission has ordered a re-run in some polling stations.

Meanwhile, President Weah's CDC has reportedly approached the High Court and the Supreme Court seeking to stop the further release of the results.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other international observation missions have intensified their preventive diplomacy to douse hightened tension.

In the first round of voting on 10 October, President Weah, 47, had 43.83% of the vote, against 43.44% scored by Mr. Boakai, 78.

In the 2017 run-off between the two men, Weah garnered 61% of the votes to defeat Boakai, who served as vice-president from 2006-2017 to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Nobel Laureate and Africa’s first elected female Head of State.
