Lagos Begins Massive HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign

Lagos- Nigeria (PANA) -- Lagos State, with one of Nigeria's highest HIV prevalence rates, Saturday begins massive HIV/AIDS prevention rallies in all its 20 local governments.
The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency said Friday that it was jointly sponsoring the 20-day rallies with several non-governmental organisations involved in the campaign against the disease.
HIV/AIDS information and prevention materials would be available at the local government headquarters during the rallies, the first time such a campaign effort against the disease is being carried out in the state.
Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, has an urban and rural HIV prevalence rate of 6.
7 percent, according to the 1999 HIV sentinel survey report, the latest available so far.
The figure is higher than the national prevalence rate of 5.
