Killing of RFI journalists in Mali 'heinous act' - ECOWAS Chair

Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) - The Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, has described as a "heinous act " the killing of two French radio journalists by gunmen in northern Mali on Saturday.

Radio France International (RFI) journalists Ghislaine Dupont, 51, and Claude Verlon, 58, were abducted and shot by yet unknown gunmen in  the town of Kidal, shortly after interviewing a Tuareg rebel leader.

In a statement Monday, President Ouattara condemned the killing which, he said, saddens millions of Africans.

He condoled with the families of the slain journalists as well as their colleagues in RFI, and assured that ECOWAS will continue to work towards the total restoration of peace and security in Mali in general and the Kidal region in particular.
