Kenyan policeman killed in landmine blast

Dadaab, Kenya (PANA) - A Kenyan policeman was killed and three others wounded after a landmine explosion targeted their convoy near the Dagahley camp, in the Dadaab refugee complex in northern Kenya, a local police commander said Tuesday.

North-Eastern Provincial Police chief Leo Nyongesa, said the four Administration Police officers were returning from morning patrol when the vehicle they were travelling in hit an Improvised Explosive Device hidden on the sandy road near their camp.

“One of the officers, a constable, died on the spot of his injuries, while three of his colleagues were seriously injured. They were rushed to Dadaab district hospital for treatment,” Nyongesa said, indicating that the explosion occurred some few metres from the officers' camp.

The officers were caught in the explosion that has also extensively damaged the vehicle.

Police said an airlift was planned for the seriously injured officers who include a senior sergeant. The wounded were expected at the Nairobi Forces Memorial hospital for specialized treatment.

Meanwhile, Police have launched preliminary investigations to determine the suspects behind the latest attack.

Preliminary investigations point to direct links between the explosion and a series of IEDs detected by explosives experts on the main roads between the refugee camps.

“We suspect that the criminals who had been planting Improvised Explosive Device that has been discovered by our security personnel before causing any harm to our people,” the Police chief said.

The explosive come nearly three days after Police detected similar explosives planted on the main roads linking the three refugee camps in Dadaab, Police said.

Dagahley refugee camp is one of the three refugee camps in Dadaab in Garissa.

Incidences of landmines have been on an increase since the deployment of the Kenyan forces in Somalia in October 2011.

Kenya security personnel have been targets of Al Shabaab supporters protesting the deployment of the Kenyan military into the war-torn Somalia to root out the Islamists.
