Kenya: Volkswagen South Africa to assemble cars in Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - German car maker, Volkswagen, has announced plans to establish an  assembly plant in Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta, said Wednesday, after talks with visiting executives of Volkswagen Group .

" I am happy to welcome back to Kenya the largest car manufacturer in the world," Kenyatta said.

According to the president, Volkswagen South Africa will establish an assembly plant for motor vehicles at Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers Limited in Thika town, 40 km outside Nairobi.

"This is a milestone in my administration's determined push to grow the manufacturing base and transform Kenya into an industrialized nation," President Kenyatta added.

The Thika-based car assembly plant has long been used by a British firm, which used it to assemble Land Rover vehicles. Poor sales forced the firm to stop production.
