Kenya: US Secretary of State Kerry visits Kenya for regional security talks

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - US Secretary of State John Kerry is due in Nairobi Monday for a meeting with foreign ministers of East African countries centred on regional security matters, officials here indicated Sunday.

Kerry is expected to hold talks with his Kenyan counterpart Amina Mohamed before meeting with the foreign ministers. He will also meet Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to discuss regional counter-terrorism measures and stabilisation of South Sudan.

The world's newest state remains on a shaky path after the exit of Vice President Riek Machar, who is now understood to have fled to Democratic Republic of Congo.

South Sudan remains tense as President Salva Kiir opposes the deployment of regional security forces to calm the situation.

Sources have told PANA that fighters loyal to the sacked Vice President were marching towards Juba, the country's capital, in an attempt to dislodge President Kiir's forces.

"This is not a Kiir versus Machar war. This is a war by all the Southern Sudanese groups against the government of Kiir," a South Sudanese analyst told PANA.
