Jury selects lyric for ECOWAS Anthem

Abuja- Nigeria (PANA) -- A jury of experts in music and arts from seven member countries has selected a lyric for the ECOWAS anthem after considering 65 entries from six member States.
The ECOWAS Secretariat announced in Abuja that the winning entry was selected during a three-day meeting in the Nigerian capital 9-11 May.
The author of the winning entry was not disclosed.
ECOWAS sources told PANA Tuesday that the winner was identified only by a number so as not to influence the decision of Council of Ministers, which will first approve it before passing it on to the Heads of State and Government.
ECOWAS said the criteria used in determining the winner were that the lyrics must be original, in one of the three official languages of the community and should reflect the spirit and ideals of ECOWAS.
The lyrics must also engender a sense of belonging among the citizens and reflect the cultural and other bonds linking the peoples of the community.
Heads of State and Government approved the music for the anthem, the composition of Senegalese Falou Wade, during the jubilee Summit of the 15-Member Organisation 28 May 2000 in Abuja.
