Guinea-Bissau denies deporting refugees

Bissau- Guinea Bissau (PANA) -- The deputy chief of staff of the Guinea Bissau Armed Forces, Brigadier Emilio Costa, has refuted news reports that his country deported refugees from the Senegalese province of Casamance.
" Costa, who spoke on Bissau state radio, was reacting to news accounts alleging that about one thousand refugees had been forcibly evicted from Sao Domingo.
He said Senegalese refugees from Casamance, estimated at 23,000, had been living in the north of Guinea Bissau since 1996, with the assistance of UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
Costa noted, however, that the UNHCR withdrew from Guinea Bissau at the beginning of this year, leaving the Bissau government to shoulder the responsibility of catering for the refugees.
