Guillaume Soro confirms Gbagbo's arrest in Cote d'Ivoire

Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) - Saying "Ivorians, dry your tears, the nightmare is over", the Ivorian Prime Minister Guillaume Soro, Monday confirmed the arrest of the outgoing President Laurent Gbagbo by the Republican Forces of Côte d'Ivoire (FRCI).

In a statement on channel TV Côte d'Ivoire (TCI), Soro said the FRCI on Monday launched an assault on the presidential residence, where Gbagbo and some of his relatives were holed up.

"After fierce fighting, surrounded and defeated, Gbagbo and wife, Simone, surrendered and are currently under arrest," Soro said.

Since Sunday, the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the French Force Licorne pounded the last strongholds of Gbagbo in the commercial capital, Abidjan, in order to knock out all his heavy weapons.

FRCI, the new army created by the elected president Alassane Ouattara, launched an attack on Gbagbo 28 March to enforce the verdict at the polls.

The battle of Abidjan, which began 31 March, was tough as the FRCI met with fierce resistance from forces loyal to Gbagbo.

Gbagbo had refused to step down from power after Ouattara defeated him in the 28 November presidential run-off.
