Group backs Ivorian Amara Essy for OAU post

Abidjan- Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) -- A West African group on Wednesday expressed support for the candidature of former Ivorian foreign minister Amara Essy for the post of OAU secretary general.
In a speech in Abidjan, the president of the Fraternal Union of West African Populations (UFRAPAO) Jean-Etienne Koffi commended President Laurent Gbagbo and his cabinet for their support to Essy's candidacy.
He urged all West Africans and friends of Cote d'Ivoire to do the same.
UFRAPAO symbolically donated 100,000 F CFA to boost Essy's campaign.
(1 USD = 700 F CFA).
The successor of the incumbent OAU secretary general Salim Ahmed Salim is expected to be elected during the next OAU summit to be held in Lusaka, Zambia in July.
Other candidates are former Senegalese foreign minister Ibrahima Fall, who is currently UN assistant secretary general, Theo-Ben Guirab, Namibia's foreign and information minister Theo-Ben Gurirab and Guinea's Lansana Kouyate, the ECOWAS executive secretary.
