Government raises concern on signs of intolerance in Gambian media

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - The government of President Adama Barrow has raised concern on signs of intolerance in the  Gambian media, particularly those of a religious nature, despite expressing its continued commitment to a free media, according at statement made available to PANA on Friday.

At a cabinet meeting, presided over by President Barrow on Thursday, the Minister of Information and Communications Infrastructure was asked to consult and engage the regulator and media owners to put in place mechanisms that would ensure the media is not used as a platform to fan the flames of religious intolerance in the country.

Also  at the same meeting, members of the cabinet agreed to hold Gambia Day celebrations during the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting scheduled to hold in the United Kingdom in April 2018.

According to senior government officials, the Day's activities would be part of marking  Gambia’s re-entry into the Commonwealth, and showcase the re-emergence of The Gambia in the international community.
