Gor Mahia beat rivals Leopards to clinch Kenyan league title

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Gor Mahia clinched the Kenyan Premier League title, even with six games to go after beating arch rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 in the ‘Mashemeji’ derby on Sunday at the Kasarani Stadium.

Goals from Boniface Omondi and Bernard Ondiek saw the league champions complete a double over their arch rivals, having beaten them 2-1 in the first round.

Coming into the tie, Gor needed just a win to clinch the title with their closest opponents Bandari being 20 points adrift. They delivered the job, though with a much changed team with most of the first team stars reserved for Wednesday’s crucial CAF Confederations Cup away to USM Alger in Algiers.

“It was a great performance from the team and winning it against our arch rivals made it sweeter. We played with a bit of swagger and to be honest should have scored more goals. This performance now gives us a bit of a push going into Wednesday,” Gor head coach Dylan Kerr said.

His opposite number Rodolfo Zapata was gracious in defeat.

“No excuses, we lost to a better team. We did some mistakes and were punished and that is football. Congratulations to Gor for winning the title,” Zapata said.
