Ghanaian paper wants Accra to host West African Central Bank

Accra- Ghana (PANA) -- Ghana's biggest newspaper, the Graphic, says the country deserves to host the proposed West African Central Bank.
"We (Ghana) have declared that we want to be the financial hub of the sub-region and our past records show that we can and that Accra can be the Frankfurt of West Africa," the paper said in an editorial Friday.
It said already, the headquarters of the West African Monetary Institute is in Accra and it would "be sad if the institute that is to eventually become the West African Central Bank is relocated elsewhere".
"It is our prayer that our sister country, Nigeria, which has so many things in common with us, will support our bid to have the headquarters of the proposed Central Bank in Accra," the Graphics appealed.
It also expressed the hope that efforts by leaders of the sub-region would promote business.
"We hope to see the day when Eco, the proposed common currency, will be in circulation.
We hope to see Accra as the financial hub of the sub-region," the paper said.
ECOWAS, the 15-nation sub-regional grouping plans a West African Central Bank as part of its integration programmes.
