Ghana: Ghanaian media highlight general election

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - The media in Ghana this week gave wide coverage to Wednesday's general election that culminated in the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo of the centre-right New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the fifth president of the Fourth Republic that started in 1992.

"It is Nana Addo," was the headline of the state-owned Ghanaian Times newspaper that carried the photographs of president-elect Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, his running mate and incoming vice president.

The state-owned Graphic newspaper had the headline "Akufo-Addo our next president." It also carried a photo of Akufo-Addo addressing supporters in his victory speech on Friday night.

The newspaper also had a photo of President John Dramani Mahama addressing supporters in his house.

The Graphic story said Akufo-Addo had given a solemn pledge to be "president for all" and not let any Ghanaian down in the discharge of his duties.

"I will do all in my power to live up to the hope and expectation of all Ghanaians," he said, adding that there had never been a more humbling moment in his life. He therefore thanked the good people for their support.

The Ghanaian Times said Akufo-Addo had assured Ghanaians of his determination to change the destiny of the country.

"I will not let you down. Together we will change Ghana and fulfil the destiny of the country. We will promote freedom, justice and prosperity."

The Graphic's story on President Mahama's speech was "True winners of 2016 election are Ghanaians - Prez Mahama."
President Mahama said every election was a hard fought battle and "this one was no exception".

He said every election was for the people to have their say as to who would lead them to shape the country.

"As president, I have done my bit to contribute to the political economic and social development of the country," he said.

Other stories and photographs the newspapers carried included celebrations by NPP supporters in Accra and declaration of the results by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei.

Akufo-Addo will be sworn in on 7 January 2017.
