Ghana: ECOWAS to set up centre for disease prevention, control

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - The ECOWAS Commission has been directed to set up a regional centre for disease prevention and control in West Africa and for the enhancement of health research in the sub-region.

The directive was issued Thursday by ECOWAS leaders who met at a one-day extraordinary session in Ghana's capital, Accra, to strengthen the fight against Ebola, which has killed over 5,000 mainly in West Africa.

The leaders also urged the Commission to be involved in the ongoing initiatives towards the development of vaccines.

The Heads of State and Government reiterated the need to strengthen the regional multi-sectoral coordination in the fight against the epidemic and underpin the important role of ECOWAS in that regard.

''To that end, the Authority requests the Commission to take the necessary measures, in collaboration with all the stakeholders and persons involved in the field, to mobilise adequate resources for the coordinated implementation of the Regional Operational Plan for Response to the Ebola Virus Disease.

''The Authority directs the Commission to actively participate in the various actions undertaken to support the efforts of the Member States particularly in the planning, implementation and coordination of all United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) and African Union activities in the region,'' they said in their final communique.

The extraordinary session was attend by Presidents Thomas Boni Yayo (Benin); Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire; John Dramani Mahama (Ghana); José Mario Yaz (Guinea Bissau); Ibrahim Boubacar Keita (Mali); Mahamadou Issofou (Niger); Macky Sall (Senegal); Faure Gnassingbe (Togo), Nigeria's vice President Mohammed Sambo; Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister of Cabo Verde and Maria Cristina Lopes Almeida Fontes Lima.

PANA reported that others who attended are the Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, Republic of The Gambia Abdoulie Jobe; Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Board on EBOLA Office of the Republic of Liberia Emmanuel Dolo, Minister of Foreign Affairs
