Germany boosts HIV/AIDS prevention within ECOWAS

Lagos- Nigeria (PANA) -- ECOWAS and the Federal Republic of Germany have further deepened their cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support ECOWAS member states on reproductive health and HIV-AIDS preven t ion.
According to a news release, made available to PANA from the ECOWAS secretariat, the agreement for Germanyâ?s financial contribution, totalling 8 million euros, comes into force immediately and will run for eight years.
It will be disbursed by the German Government-owned development bank - the Kredi tanstalt flir Wiederaufbau (KfW) - otherwise called the Reconstruction Credit In s titute.
The Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr.
Jean de Dieu Somda, and the Ger man Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr.
Joachim Christoph Schwillen, signed the MOU at a b rief ceremony in Abuja, the Nigerian federal capital city, on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Somda described the cooperation between Germany and EC OWAS as â?one of the bestâ?, noting that it had been exciting working in Nigeri a, the ECOWAS headquarters.
He described the ECOWAS-German cooperation as â?concrete, efficient and able to meet the needsâ? of the institutionâ?s member states.
In his response, Schwillen said Germany was ready to seek more ways of deepening its relations with ECOWAS.
He further expressed delight over the signing of the agreement, saying it was an other step towards improving the relations between the two parties.
