Gambian magazine names new ICC prosecutor person of the year, 2011

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Newly-elected Chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mrs.Fatou Bom Bensouda of the Gambia, has been named "Person of the Year, 2011" by the Gambia News and Report weekly magazine.

Mrs. Bensouda, a former Attorney General and Justice Minister of the Gambia and Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, was unanimously elected Chief Prosecutor of the Hague-based ICC at the December session of the legislative body of the Court’s Assembly of States Parties in New York, US.

In a letter conveying the news of the award to Mrs. Bensouda, the proprietor of the Dippakunda-based Gambia Communication Agency and Baroueli Enterprises, publishers of the weekly magazine, Mr. Swaebou Conateh, stated that Lawyer Bensouda’s selection was due to the exemplary strides she continued to make at the ICC.

The newspaper reeled out Mrs. Bensouda's other achievements to include her appointment first as Senior Legal Adviser at the United Nations-backed Tanzania-based International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and then as Deputy Chief Prosecutor at the ICC.
