Gambian President sacks education minister

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) – The Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, has dropped the country’s Minister of High Education, Dr. Mariama Sarr-Ceesay, and replaced her with former Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, the presidency said in a statement.

The statement, however, did not indicate the reason for Sarr-Ceesay's removal from office.

It said the president, “acting under the provision of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, relieved Dr. Mariama Sarr-Ceesay of her cabinet appointment with immediate effect".

The new Education minister, Dr. Tangara, previously held the Education portfolio before being moved to Foreign Affairs and then to the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters.

The statement also announced that the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters has now been transferred to the Office of the President.
