Gambian Army to crack down on indiscriminate use of military accoutrement

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - The Gambia Armed Forces has said it will soon commence a crackdown on individuals and business people who import and sell military accoutrement.

According a statement made available to PANA on Monday and signed by army spokesman Major Lamin Sanyang: “Some people who are not serving members of the Gambia Armed Forces are engaged in the indiscriminate use and in some instances abuse of the military camouflage, combat boots and caps in public.

“This development is unfortunate and if unchecked could be used by organized criminal gangs and unscrupulous individuals not only to impersonate members of the Armed Forces but also to perpetrate crimes within the community.”

The statement warned those involved in this act desist from the practice, adding that all businesses involved in the importation and sale of such items are advised to comply with this directive to avoid confiscation and possible legal action.

The Gambia Armed Forces reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security and therefore would not compromise on issues that had the potential to threaten national security.
