Gambia: Opposition party decries closure of Gambian daily

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Closure of Gambia's Daily Observer by the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) has a bearing on some ulterior motive to stifle the newspaper, besides being an affront to press freedom in the country, the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) charged on Monday.

"The closure of the newspaper is an affront to press freedom and obviously against the greater good of the country," the party said in a statement made available to PANA in Banjul.

“The Daily Observer and the media in general are integral to the country’s new democracy as the constitution points out that freedom of expression and press freedom are constitutional rights. The Daily Observer has continued to provide a platform for many to express themselves, and moreover, it created employment for many Gambians,” the party noted in the statement.

“It must be noted that the Daily Observer has provided a platform to all, despite the fact that in the past the media was dominated by the ruling party.”

Earlier, the Gambian government expressed concern over the “temporary” closure of the premises of the Daily Observer, stating that the move had nothing to do with the paper's editorial policy.

The Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure said it learnt with concern of the closure of the paper by the GRA due to its non-compliance with its tax obligations.
