Gambia: Jammeh lifts directive on headtie for "working" women

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - The Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, has lifted his recent directive that women working in public offices must put on headtie, not hijab, during working hours.

The directive was issued by the Gambian leader on 4 January, 2016, urging all female staff within government ministries, departments and agencies to put on headtie during working hours.

The Gambian leader's directive rescinding the order was broadcast on the Gambia  Radio and Television Services GRTS news, according to PANA.

According to the broadcast, the order cancelling the directive was taken in the interest of women whom Jammeh said were his 'best friends".
