G5 Sahel countries, AU, EU hold summit in Brussels on 23 February

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) - An international fund-raising conference on Sahel, jointly organised by the United Nations, the European Union and the African Union, will be held on 23 February in Brussels, according to an official press statement released here on Monday.

It said the conference's goal is to raise funds for the joint G5 Sahel force set up by Chad, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso to fight terrorist groups operating in the Sahel region.

Heads of State from the G5 countries will take part in the talks along with senior European and UN officials.

According to EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, the talks will enable to strengthen the cooperation in common interest zones particularly security, migration, the fight against terrorism, youth employment, humanitarian action and long-term development.

For the period 2014 to 2020, EU set a target of raising eight billion Euros for financing  development in Sahel countries, including the emergency fund for Africa to tackle the serious causes of instability and irregular migration and create job opportunities for youths.
