Fund for science, technology established in Côte d'Ivoire

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) - The Ivorian government on Wednesday announced the adoption of a bill governing the organisation and functioning of a Fund for Science, Technology and Innovation (FONSTI), whose aim is to finance research activities.

According to the communiqué at the end of the weekly meting of the Council of ministers, FONSTI was established within the framework of the implementation of the Strategic Support Programme for Scientific Research (PASRES), which is the result of the scientific partnership between Côte d’Ivoire and Switzerland.

In accord with Swiss partners linked to PASRES, FONSTI will get a five billion CFAF capital from initial PASRES grant.

The FONSTI resources will be exclusively used for the strengthening of a national research and innovation system through the scientific and economic valorisation of the results from research.

PASRES is a competitive financing fund for scientific research, established on 15 June 2007.

Its strategic goals are the reduction of extreme poverty and hunger, improvement of human health and environment protection and management of sustainable development of natural resources.

It has a capital of 5 billion CFAF, granted by the Ivorian-Swiss fund for economic and social development.

The interests generated by the capital, estimated at 300 million CFAF per year, help finance research projects and the functioning of its management organs.
