France expresses concern about Pope's condom view

Paris- France (PANA) – France on Wednesday express-ed concern about comments by P ope Benedict XVI that HIV/AIDS could not be fought with the distribution of cond o ms.
'If we are not in a position to pass judgment on the church's doctrine, we feel that such comments jeopardise public health policies and the need to protect hum a n life,” Eric Chevallier, spokesperson of the French Foreign Office, said.
He said during a press briefing in Paris that the Pope’s comments would have an impact on the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Chevallier paid tribute to state and non-governmental organizations which carry out policies for the prevention of the pandemic and access to care.
'Our thoughts go the persons carrying HIV/AIDS and to their close relatives, who are daily aware of the reality of the epidemic and to say to them, to young peo p le and to future generations, to be responsible and united,” he said.
The Pope sparked off a fierce debate when he stated on Tuesday on board the plan e to Yaounde, Cameroon, for the start of his one-week maiden African visit that t he problem of AIDS could not be handled with the distribution of condoms.
“On the contrary, their distribution worsens the problem,” the Pope said.
