France backs reconciliation in Cote d'Ivoire

Paris, France (PANA) – France backs the national reconciliation policy initiated by Ivorian president Alassane Ouattara, as well as its rejection  of impunity, the spokesperson for the French foreign affairs ministry, Bernard Valero, said on Wednesday in Paris.

Speaking in a press briefing, Mr Valero stressed the quality and importance of ties between the two countries.

French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, on 21 May attended the investiture of president Ouattara in Yamoussoukro at the end of a long post-electoral crisis because of the refusal of incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo to step down.

French forces present in the West African country within the framework of the UN mission, took a decisive part in the arrest of Gbagbo, who was for several days hiding in the bunker of the presidency.
