Five policemen killed in Al Shabaab attack in North Eastern Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) – The Kenyan Police are in pursuit of an Al Shabaab operative, named Jamaa Nuh Abdille, who led an attack at the Fino Police camp in Mandera Friday, killing five border patrol Police officers and disabling telecommunication connection in the North Eastern region, Police said.

Charles Owino, the Director of Communication at the Kenya Police, said the leader of the group of 100 Al Shabaab attackers, Abdille, fled to Somalia after the attack.

The attack took place at the Fino Police Station and at the Fino Administration Police Camp in Mandera, north eastern Kenya, at 02:00, leading to a fierce exchange of fire between the Al Shabaab operatives and the Kenyan Police, Owino said in a statement.

“We have identified the leader of the group that carried out the attack who fled with others to Somalia. We are hot on their trail,” Owino said.

The Kenya Police said during the exchange of fire, a number of the Al Shabaab operatives were believed to have been killed with others sustaining serious injuries.

The attackers had earlier planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) along the road leading to the camp to slowdown Police response to the attack.

They also disabled the telecommunication connection around the region after destroying a nearby telecommunication mast, rendering the area inaccessible through mobile phone communication.

“We once again call upon all Kenyans to be vigilant and report any movement by suspicious persons along the Kenya-Somalia border to Police or any security agency for immediate action,” Owino said.
